What this means is that if you borrow a video from the adult department (cost $1.00) you can take a children's video out AT NO CHARGE!! The only thing you should remember is that this only applies to adult and children videos....not Teen videos!!!! Here's the plan parents...you can let the kids watch their video, take a bath and then go to bed. AND THEN....after a very long day, Mom & Dad can finally sit down, relax and watch a movie! The perfect end to a not so perfect day!!! Don't forget to stop in next Friday and pick up a DVD/Video for yourself, then go upstairs and let the kids pick out a DVD/video. All this fun for $1.00. Can't be Beat!!

Teen Summer Reading Prizes

Hot off the Press!! The clowns were hilarious (they happen to be library staff members), the pretzels and water ice were delicious, and the games were fantastic. But the best thing was that our Havertown residents had a chance to come together for a few hours--mothers, fathers, kids, neighbors and families all having a great time at the same time and the same place. While moms were playing bingo, dads tried their luck at the roulette wheel and kids were were having their faces painted whilelistening to stories told by Mr. Malcolm. A
great time was had by all!

I mentioned that this was our 3rd annual Game Night. Each year we strive to outdo ourselfromthe year before by adding some new attractions or programs. From the crowd that attended last Wednesday, I think we must be doing something right!...BUT we are always open to suggestions. If you think your have a good idea to help make this event even better please let us know and possibly we can use it next year.

Book in a Bag

The mission of the Haverford Township Free Library is to provide you with resources, programs, and services that enhance and enrich your life.

With that in mind, I want to tell you about a new service that we are offering our customers. We call it Book Club in a Bag. Have you ever been chatting with a few of your neighbors or talking with a few friends at work about starting a book club. If you have, please keep on reading! The library has a new service called Book Club in a Bag, and this is how it works.

We provide everything your group needs for a great discussion...all in one easy kit! Each kit contains eight copies of one title, a list of discussion questions for that title and other support material such as author biographies and published reviews. And here's the best part...it is all packaged in one customized tote bag! If someone in the group is visually handicapped, we have also included the same title in LARGE PRINT and Audio Book format. So far we have nineteen bags ready to go. If you are interested in this service, call our Reference Dept. (610-446-3082 X202). One of our librarians will be able to tell you the titles of the books you can choose from. Our librarians are always open to suggestions, so if you happen to have a title that you would like added to this collection, be sure to mention it when you call.

To whet your appetite, I'm going to list just a few titles.

Plain Truth by Jodi Picoult, Mystic River by Dennis Lehane, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith and Angels and Demons by Dan Brown.

Sad, but Happy Too!

Last Friday our Children's Librarian, Pat Evans, retired after working at the library for 30 years. As Pat mentioned in her speech after receiving a proclamation at the July 10th Commissioner's Meeting, "The children I told stories to when I first started working at the library are now the parents of the children I read to just last week"! Time sure flies when you're having fun!!

I titled this posting "Sad, but Happy Too" because although everyone at the library will miss her, I'll miss her just a little bit more. You see, Pat & I started working at the library within a few months of one another, which means that yours truly has worked at the library for 30 years also. Over the years Pat & I probably spent nearly as much time working side by side as we did with our families. But I'm also happy for Pat 'cause now she and her husband (who recently retired also) can dote on their granddaughter even more than when they were working, travel, do "crafty" things which Pat is so good at, and just relax and enjoy this next leg of life's journey.

So Pat, if you happen to be reading this...GO GIRL...have a great retirement.

And The Winner Is...

Aren't you the lucky blog browser because you're the first to find out who the big winners were for the 1st and 2nd weeks of our Summer Reading Club (Summer Splas) contest? How would you like a really good book to read while enjoying the sun & water? I would like to tell you about a couple of items that staff members have highly recommended.

On Friday, January 13, 1888 in a 3 munute span of time the temperature dropped18 degrees. Shortly after the sun went down the temperature continued to drop in the northwest gale. So starts the book by David Laskin, entitled Children's Blizzard. What happens next will keep you on the edge of your seat (whether it be the side of the pool or beach chair). I do have a warning though...watch out for the sun 'cause you are going to get so involved with this book that I'm concerned you might get sunburned!

If you happen to be a Civil War buff, I have a book-on-tape that you're really going to enjoy....The Widow of the South by Robert Hicks. A story based on the true experiences of a Civil War heroine finds Carrie McGavock witnessing the bloodshed of the Battle of Franklin, falling in love with a wounded man, and dedicating her home as a burial site for fallen soldiers.

Stop in the library, wander through the stacks, and pick up some great books, books-on-tape, videos or music and while you're here I am personally inviting you to join our Adult Summer Reading program!

The Library Wizard!

Movies From Books

Recently our Reference Staff has set up two new displays in the library that I'm sure you will find not only eye pleasing, but extremely helpful to those who enjoy reading a book that has been recommended by a friend. One of the displays is entitled "If you liked The Da Vinci Code"..., the other, "If you liked Memoirs of a Geisha...". As I'm sure you have guessed, the books on display are all very similiar in style and content to the featured book.

As you probably know, both books have been made into movies. Memoirs of a Geisha is due out in DVD soon and The Da Vinci Code will be in theaters this Spring.

Why not stop in the Library and take some time just to browse I'm sure you're going to find them interesting and helpful.

Sci-Fi Book Club

Are you interested in aliens and space travel? Do you like movies that take place in the 25th century? Do you borrow only books that have a "Sci-fi" sticker on the spine...well do I have a surprise for you! We've always known that there are a lot of enthusiastic "sci-fiers" out there, so the library has decided to start a Sci-fi book club starting on April 20 and continuing on the 3rd Thursday of every month. At our 1st meeting, we will be discussing books by David Eddings, specifically, the Belgariad Series -- Books 1-5. If you think you would enjoy dicussing these novels with others who have a penchant for this genre, please come and participate in the discussion on April 20. The meeting will be held on the 2nd floor right across from the elevator.

If you would like more information, please contact Chris Faris at 610-446-3082, EXT 210 or email her at havgirltech@comcast.net.

A Lovely Legacy

Recently we held a memorial in the Children's Room at the Library for Judith Harbison who had volunteered here a few years back. Judith, who was a lover of books and a voracious reader, passed away a few months ago and her husband and children chose to have their mother and wife remembered by asking friends and extended family to donate to our library in her memory. The family requested that all gifts be given to the Children's Dept. I was the person who managed this memorial and I can tell you that hardly a day went by for an entire month that I did not receive a gift in memory of Judith. Even now, over three months after Mrs. Harbison has passed, we are still receiving gifts in her memory. Not only is our Children's Dept. still benefitting from the thoughtfulness and generosity of her family, but also all the children who are using the library now and will continue to use the library for a long, long time.

What A Lovely Legacy!

Wait 'till You See Us Now!

Have you been to the library recently? Would like to relax in the evening after a hard day? Need some time away from the little ones? Do you just need to get out of the house? If you answered "yes" to one or all of the above questions, I think we have started something that you may be interested in.

The library has begun a new program called "Needles at Night". The way it works is that every Monday (starting Oct. 3) from 7:00 to 8:30pm you can bring your needlework, no matter what kind of needlework, have a nice cup of tea, meet and talk with others who are doing needle crafts just like yourself and relax. It promises to be a very enjoyable night out with the girls!

If you would like more information, call Chris Faris at 610-446-3082, ext. 210.

OUR NEW GAME COLLECTION

All you "gamers" out there have certainly been enjoying our new Game collection. As fast as we can put them on the shelf, that's how fast they are being borrowed. What we can definitely use now is your input. Are there some really hot, popular games out there that you would like to see in our collection? Do more of you have Play Station 2 or XBox or the Cube? It helps us to know which game system is the most popular when we are adding to the collection. If you're reading this you must be a "gamer" so please take a few minutes and give me your ideas. I can't promise that we will buy everything you suggest, but we will do our best to keep up with the most popular titles. Your suggestions should fall into the "E" (everybody) or "T" (teen) category. Thanks for your help. I'll wait to hear from you.

Librarywizard

Our new blog master is the Librarywizard!
